Neighbourhood Watch
Objectives
-
To
prevent crime.
By improving the security of property, increasing vigilance, reducing the
opportunities for crime through crime prevention awareness and developing
and maintaining a caring community.
-
To
assist the police in the detection of crime
Through promoting effective communication and the prompt reporting of
suspicious incidents and criminal activity
-
To
reduce undue fear of crime
By providing accurate information about risks by promoting a sense of
security and community spirit, especially amongst the more vulnerable
members of the community, the very young, older people, those with a
disability and people in a minority group.
-
To
improve police and community liaison
By providing effective communications through the police voice mail system,
which advises co-ordinators of local incidents and crime trends. These
messages can be passed on to scheme members.
-
Neighbourhood Watch schemes belong to the community, are run by their
members and are supported by the local police. It must be emphasised that
the scheme is a community initiative, which is supported by the police, and
not organised or run by them. Success, therefore, depends on what members
make of it.
