Neighbourhood Watch Objectives

  1. To prevent crime.
By improving the security of property, increasing vigilance, reducing the opportunities for crime through crime prevention awareness and developing and maintaining a caring community.

  2. To assist the police in the detection of crime
Through promoting effective communication and the prompt reporting of suspicious incidents and criminal activity

  3. To reduce undue fear of crime
By providing accurate information about risks by promoting a sense of security and community spirit, especially amongst the more vulnerable members of the community, the very young, older people, those with a disability and people in a minority group.

  4. To improve police and community liaison
By providing effective communications through the police voice mail system, which advises co-ordinators of local incidents and crime trends. These messages can be passed on to scheme members.

  5. Neighbourhood Watch schemes belong to the community, are run by their members and are supported by the local police. It must be emphasised that the scheme is a community initiative, which is supported by the police, and not organised or run by them. Success, therefore, depends on what members make of it.
